My beliefs on science writing are the increasing wall separating the general public and the medial field. I believe science writing scares the general audience about what we are testing and the importance of experiments. we need to communicate to the general audience what we are doing since its beneficial for them. My job as a science writer is to be informative as possible to the general public. Use my knowledge to give announcements on important situations and be able to communicate to other scientist to improve are experiments in the future.
I believe that science writing is a form of writing that is distributing information about projects or experiments to the public or for other scientists. The three forms that we did are Informative Sustainability paper and proposal for research. The informative paper was to talk to the audience about Hela cells and how it has a big impact on the science world today. The audience is the general public. The structure is informing the audience of Hela cell and the safety and dangers. An example is “. This was all the information that they found from studying on Cancer, and they wouldn’t have found it without Hela Cells. Hela cells should be called Henrietta Lacks cells Because that is where the cells came from. In 1951 Henrietta went to the Johns Hopkins hospital because she was having issues with vaginal bleeding. When she was getting checked out by her gynecologist, he found out that she had malignant cancer in her cervix. So, what He did without permission was he cut a piece of her cervix and sent it to Dr George Gey”. This is me informing the audience what is happening with healer cells and giving a background on my research paper. Next is the Sustainability paper. Sustainability is the idea that we work together as animals, plants and humans work together to have a better earth as well as a healthy life. The audience is general as well and the structure is a research proposal to fix the issue. An example that i wrote “ I have been doing a lot of research that involves understanding both sides of the situation regarding recycling. I’ve read the issues that contradict my ideas from starting and continuing. First and foremost, the idea I would like to zoom in on is just simply the other projects that have been going around New York City from the governor including funding money for new buses and new trains as well. So, because all the money is being funded towards that, it will be a lot of money replacing all those forms of transportation. This is me being professional, as if I’m talking to the governor herself and trying to fix the issue towards recycling In New York.” Lastly, it’s Research paper and what we did on the research paper is that the structure of it is review. The audience is scientists, so we use a lot of big Words to talk to them and the structure is A research proposal on what to do better on the next experiment An example of min is “ The following study was from environmental occupational institute they wanted to know the exposures of ingestion, inhalation, and dermal exposure of 6 men and women in the ages between 20-50. I will put a spotlight on dermal exposure since I will be talking about skin and Ingestion. The studies found evidence that by being exposed to all the chemicals of what is in tap water it is easily absorbed in the skin. As well as extreme amounts of minerals being consumed with the water that we have in our house. With these 2 combined it will give us a higher chance of poisoning from these minerals as well as an attack on our immune system.” With my research paper, I have to explain what the research is about so people can understand what’s missing in that research.
- Valuing and applying linguistic differences to inform and educate audiences of various language varieties
Linguistics is very important for how we talk to People because if you talk to scientists, they have a lot of big words that they use that are used in the science world that we learn in university. And even though we usually have a habit of using those words which is necessary in for professors or.lab partners we can’t use those words in a general audience in which we have to use words that everyone can understand and explain the words that we’re using and why it’s important for the general public to learn about it.As well as linguistic differences Causes a barrier to scientists and the general audience. And it’s very bad because the general audience is usually the ones impacted by the experiments and therefore they should know 100% what the scientists are doing.it understand completely how it’s good for them to do so.So scientists should use their linguistics by first, for example, writing a paper on what they’re talking about and trying to make it general audience friendly On where nothing is confusing and certain words or vocabulary that are structured differently to be explained very well. Not only that, but also visuals as well. Showing or having pictures can help the audience see the severity of the issue that we’re trying to explain As well as take action.I think my audience really does understand my sustainability Public service announcement in which i made sure to explain what sustainability is and why is it important to us humans to have sustainability but also the benefits on The earth itself in which we are not just doing it because we want more money but because we care about the earth that we live on.
- Valuing and applying linguistic differences to inform and educate audiences of various language varieties
Believes that science writers should have consideration on the linguistics that they’re using because if they are not, They are putting the general public in higher risk because with all of the trust issues that the general public naturally have now with scientists and doctors for unethical reasons, doing that more could cause us to Not evolve as much And find better, healthier solutions for us humans, which we the general public are needed for those experiments. What I learned about sustainability is I learned that it’s working together in a sense where humans work with nature and nature works with us as well, and animals work with nature and humans as well, because they all have a part of this circle of life and we need to.work together to keep this going with the issue of global warming. I also learned that normally in.Neighborhoods that are left behind for example, such as Harlem, they don’t get enough social justice and where they always become left behind when for example New York is renovating and giving new things like more trees or more grass and better stuff while.certain areas they don’t have trees they don’t have good buildings they run down and that can cause a lot of sustainability issues in which they can be rodents mold that can affect the place that they live. The strategies that I’ve used to convey these ideas were Explain the issue that we have now, which is global warming, and how because we are hurting the way sustainability works for animals in the sea, it’s causing issues.as well as putting a lot of garbage in our waters is causing us issues by giving us not clean water and we need water It’s a whole cycle in a sense where we have to work together with nature to make it beneficial for us as well. My paper was mostly on water and how the government should take care of our oceans better since our beaches are just so disgusting and not manageable that people don’t even go and it’s beneficial for the beaches to be cleaned for it can help.their mental state as well as just the animals. The challenges that I had about sustainability was making people care about beaches because New York is in place where they just go to parks or museums or like cool places. However, beaches are normally left behind ’cause people don’t go to them from how dirty and horrible they are and if as well as how dangerous the water is as well from how dirty it is. It can be has a lot of chemicals and glass.I first made sure and clear on how it benefits us humans to care because we like Positive things to happen to us and we like benefits of things so i made sure that say that this is good for us for our mental state this is good for us so we can enjoy the beaches of new york. For my research proposal Mine was more different than finding a research paper. I used my observations and visuals of my sisters and eye eczema and how it got worse.I thought about many ways because eczema doesn’t do well in the weather. However it’s become uncontrollable and I wanted to know why. And I know that we have tap water. I searched up tap water. That’s where it all came up where tap water is extremely.for people with eczema. I found out the niche so simply because people just don’t make experiments with water with people who have skin disorders, which are needed in these experiments with water since they’re the ones most affected. What I used was the eczema association and I used their part on eczema and how it can affect.people with eczema more by making their skin more dry as well as probably ’cause people who Don’t have eczema? Start having eczema symptoms.
- Negotiate your own writing goals and audience expectations regarding conventions of genre, medium, and rhetorical situations. Strategies adapting primary and secondary audiences to complicated or new scientific topics?
For the informative review paper, I learned the importance of being very descriptive in my paper and not holding back, as well as making sure that once I reread it many times, I as a general audienceUnderstand it.Additionally, I also made sure that I expressed the importance and the dangers of what was happening with heel cells and why we should.be aware of this situation. There wasn’t any complications towards this informative review of the paper because I.Reread what I was gonna be writing about, One main problem is addressing. structural racism and where people are not getting treated for certain important things equally as others just because of their race and it should be pointed out that not only does the medical community need to understand it’s bad but us as well that we should be aware.which is the importance to for people to know about keto cells and the mistrust that we have towards the science community and how we can build a bridge so we can work together.
The other one that I did was the sustainability Public service announcement.Strategies that I use was to tell the issues that are happening with sustainability and how in history we always had this issue.and now it’s becoming horrible cause the most important form of living that we need is getting infected and full of chemicals. My target audience was mostly the general audience, so we can work together to talk to the government and doing more to facing that because from what we see in the government paper, all this talking about money, about millions and millions of fixing, it’s not going to be enough to.everything and make everything clean like it should. An example is a chart I analyzed. I had to do Research to explain so the audience won’t get confused.
The choice of colours language that I use is very important on what I was trying to portray and the paper for example I put water everywhere to show that we were talking about water and most importantly, I made the water blue because clearly our waters is not that color is very murky, very green and full of garbage.
Strategy that took adapting For the research proposal is to sound very professional in a sense where I don’t explain a lot. However, because of the words that I’m using, it already explains enough. the vocabulary and the importance of doing background research to prove my point and to Analyse.I tried my best to analyze and describe graphs that were from 1995, which proved my nation how the problem with tap water isn’t being experimented enough, but additionally in the experiment there was no people with skin disorders.and just by people with skin disorders doing that test about chloroform in the skin it showed how bad it was for people with normal skin to have water like that. I also didn’t have any issues with the voice over on my presentation because I did a presentation face to face which I preferred. I think it’s important to visually be there presenting your presentation, for it shows the seriousness of you. It takes your time to try and talk to the audience And to see my facial expressions on how seriously I take this topic.
